Behind the Brand

Opened in 1880 as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane and one of Buffalo's most iconic buildings and a National Historic Landmark, the 145-year old Richardson Olmsted Campus is being renewed after years of neglect.  Designed by great American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and the famed landscape team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the building incorporated a system of enlightened treatment for persons with mental illness developed by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride.  Today, the Richardson Olmsted Campus is home to one of the largest historic preservation projects in the nation.  Since 2006, the nonprofit Richardson has been hard at work bringing the site back to life after decades of neglect.

Members of the public are cordially invited to tour the undeveloped spaces and grounds of this national historic treasure.  The limited-time-offer of the "Friends & Family Four-Pack" tour package allows guests to tour these iconic spaces at a discount of 50% off the normal package price.

The Richardson Olmsted Campus follows all local, state and federal Covid-19 related guidelines to keep our guests, volunteers and staff safe.  Masks or appropriate facial coverings are required while on site and for the full length of our tours.  The Richardson Center Corporation reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone unwilling or unable to meet these requirements.
